In the past, I’ve talked about the importance of a morning routine. Personally, I find transition time in the morning to be crucial for my wellbeing and sanity. 🙂 I know that many sensitive people feel more calm, centered and ready to tackle the day when they get a bit of alone time in the morning.

However, have you ever considered the importance of an afternoon recharge? Certain countries just get it. The siesta has to have been invented by a Highly Sensitive Genius. However, if you live in the US, or any other country that has adopted the “productivity or die” slogan that we seem to embrace in this country, we don’t have the luxury of down time in the afternoon. So I am on a campaign to get every Sensitive Badass to embrace their version of an afternoon siesta!

Have you ever noticed that as you go through your day, you tend to get more and more exhausted? By 3 or 4pm, you are likely “fried.” That is what I tend to feel like in the afternoon after a normal day in the life of Cortney. If I power through the afternoon without taking time to myself, the evenings don’t run very smoothly.

As we go through our day, we are naturally affected by people, our environments and the activities we are engaged in. These interactions and activities slowly chip away at our energy levels and our nervous systems react by slowly getting more and more depleted.

In my free eBook, From Hot Mess to Badass: 8 Steps to Empowerment for Highly Sensitive People, I talk about how I used to live life feeling like I was in meltdown mode a lot of the time. Part of what kept me in meltdown was not realizing what my needs were around self-care. I was simply unaware of how draining my day was! I would go from sun-up to sun-down doing, doing, doing, and it was exhausting to my nervous system!

Before realizing that I was an HSP, I mirrored the lives of those around me. Other people seemed to be able to handle intense workloads, multiple kids, tons of errands, volunteer work…you name it! I thought that was the norm and that was what was expected of me. So I tried it. And I hated it. I suffered because I was living life with a jam-packed schedule with zero attention to what I truly wanted to do with my life, and zero attention to my own needs, desires or self-care.

Is that you? Do you feel like you’re living life according to the “rules” and feeling totally depleted?

This is your invitation to start thinking about your needs for a change. It’s time to ask your inner self and your body: What do I need to feel good?

Chances are, you need a lot more time to recharge throughout your day.

Honor that.

It doesn’t have to be a huge break in your day, but it should be spent doing something that makes you feel amazing.

Here are some ideas to get you excited:

  • Take a walk outside and notice the nature around you
  • Put on your favorite song, close your eyes and get lost in the melody
  • Grab coffee with a friend
  • Meditate (my personal choice)
  • Take a cat nap (under your desk, George Costanza style?)
  • Stretch for a few minutes
  • Dance or move your body!

You get the idea. Taking this sacred time to recharge your batteries in the afternoon prepares you for getting through the rest of your day in style.

For a bit more on this, watch the video below.

What will you implement as your sacred afternoon time? I would love to hear from you, so please comment below to let me know your thoughts and take-aways!
