Greetings from Rhode Island!

If you’ve read my “highly sensitive story” you might remember that I grew up in Los Angeles, but I was born in Newport, Rhode Island. I’ve always thought of Newport as my home because of how safe, happy, and carefree I felt here as a child. It was a shocking contrast to how I felt in Los Angeles: often plagued by anxiety, afraid, and out of place.

I spent my summers in Newport as a child, and it’s where I always felt the happiest.

I learned later that it’s in part because of it’s beauty, the quiet, the ocean and rocky coastline. This spoke to my sensitive nature. I was able to relax and feel cared for here in a way that I couldn’t in the urban environment of Los Angeles.

This leads to my topic for this week: PROTECTION.

From a young age (we moved to LA when I was 5), I was taught by my amazing (but very protective) mother, that I was living in a very dangerous place. I was a naturally cautious child, and hearing about all the dangerous and frightening things that could happen to me caused me to feel very afraid. I naturally developed what I now refer to as “Energetic Shields” – a type of energetic armor that keeps me safe by keeping others out.

It comes in very handy when I’m out and about amongst lots of people and it’s something that I can let go of when I’m with people that feel safe to me.

The downside of someone who is really, really good at shielding and protecting is that they can get a bit too good at keeping things out of their life: both people and experiences. We get into our comfort zone of staying protected: I fall into this camp.

This can lead to isolation from people and a tendency to turn down experiences or opportunities. We can get way too comfortable in our “protected palace” and miss life completely.

On the other side of the spectrum, there are some sensitive people who never learned to develop these shields. These are the sensitive souls who are wide open to everything and everyone.

The beauty of this is that they often lead with huge hearts and tend to say yes to everything. The downside for this type is they are very easily drained, taken advantage of, and unable to “shield” when they need to.

Ideally, we need to be able to open completely and shield completely.

The trouble comes when we are too much of one or the other: either way too protected or too under-protected.

In this week’s video, I talk about this idea of protection and being either too open or too closed. Click here to watch.

So ask yourself: Are you too wide open, or are you too closed off? Or are you just right? (Remind you of Goldilocks, by any chance?)

As always, I would love to hear from you, so please comment below to let me know your a-ha’s and takeaways from this week’s love note!
