Oh my goodness, what a week!
Have you been through the ringer this week? If so, join the club because I sure have!
But that happens, right? Life is always moving…changing…with both ups and downs.
I remember talking to a friend of mine just last week and telling her that I was feeling so incredibly good. I felt on top of my game. When I’m feeling amazing, I tend to feel like nothing can take me down because I’ve got clear perspective, I’m focused, I’m feeling strong, happy, loving, grateful, and generally connected to all the wonderful things life has to offer.
Then….WHAM! I got b*tch-slapped by a whole bunch of things outside my control. Suddenly, all that inner calm and strength I was feeling disappeared and I went into survival mode.
In the past, this kind of disruption would have had me out for the count…for weeks…and perhaps it would have even triggered a longer period of meltdown.
So how did I move through it so quickly this week?
I’ve developed a mindset that helps me move through the struggle.
I was talking to one of my coaching clients last week. She got b*tch-slapped by the Universe as well and has been struggling with things outside of her control. She feels like she has fallen into a hole and is struggling to find her way out.
Many of us live with the false illusion that when we are working toward a goal, we should make progress, then get there and stay at our goal destination…forever. Any perceived struggle becomes what we label as “failure” and we think we have regressed and moved back to where we started. This false illusion is the pitfall…there is no such thing as working toward something, achieving it, and then staying in that one moment of achievement forever.
Life is cyclical. We go up, and we come down, but we are always moving forward. It’s how we choose to navigate these cycles that can make all the difference in whether we experience a simple pothole in the road, or a sinkhole. Which is easier to move through?
If we think of life as a road, it’s never a completely smooth ride. There are moments when you are flying down the road and it’s smooth sailing. Eventually, however, you will encounter a pothole. This pothole is a momentary disruption, and most of the time, you will simply roll right through it, encountering a bump along the way. Sometimes it’s a small pothole, and sometimes it’s a big one.
However, there are times when we encounter a pothole and instead of rolling through it, experiencing the bump then continuing along our path, the earth opens up and you fall into a huge sinkhole. This is much harder to get out of, right?
However, here’s the kicker…whether you experience a challenge as a pothole vs. a sinkhole is completely up to you. (And yes, sometimes the pothole is HUGE…)
What makes the difference? It’s how you manage your mind in the midst of the struggle. Haven’t I mentioned that “Mindset” is everything? 😉
In this week’s video, I talk about moving through the challenge and what can happen when our mindset prevents us from gracefully navigating the potholes in life. Click here to watch.
So ask yourself: What is your “mind” telling you when you get bitch-slapped by the Universe? Is it keeping you stuck by creating a sinkhole, rather than allowing you to experience the bump and move on?
As always, I would love to hear from you, so please comment below to let me know your a-ha’s and takeaways from this week’s love note!
